Shockwave

Innovative and non-invasive treatment using first-class technology

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical treatment option that works by delivering targeted mechanical impulses (sound waves) to damaged tissues. These impulses increase blood flow and stimulate cell regeneration and healing.

It is particularly effective in the treatment of tendonitis. There is great evidence to support shockwave therapy in the treatment of both acute and long-term conditions such as achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and tennis elbow where inflammation has persisted in the tendon for longer than necessary and the injury has become chronic.

Effective Treatment of Acute and Chronic Injuries

Shockwave therapy is suitable for a large number of conditions with minimal side effects. Some named conditions treated at The Sussex Osteopaths with Shockwave include:

  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Tennis or Golfer’s elbow
  • Shin splints
  • Patella tendonitis
  • Hamstring tendinopathy

Shockwave therapy is administered directly to the skin. A gel is applied to the skin before the treatment to allow better transmission of the sound waves to the injured area. Therefore loose-fitting clothing or the option to wear shorts or a vest may be necessary.

The device is a little noisy and treatment can be mildly uncomfortable but most patients are able to tolerate it well. Make sure to speak to your therapist, as the treatment can be adjusted to your individual response or tolerance.

Shockwave therapy treatments last between 3 and 15 minutes depending on the area of the body and the condition being treated

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Shockwave Therapy do?

Shockwave therapy works by creating micro-trauma to the affected area in order to initiate a healing process in the body known as the inflammatory cascade. This acute inflammatory response increases blood flow to the area which in turn stimulates cell regeneration and healing. The healing mechanisms rushing to the ‘new’ micro-damage will also help to start the healing process of the chronic injury and encourage the resolution of old inflammation.

Is shockwave therapy suitable for me?

Shockwave Therapy is a great modality for people suffering with both acute and chronic tendon injuries.

Shockwave Therapy may not be suitable if you have a history of cardiac or neurological conditions, are pregnant, under the age of 18, take oral anti-coagulant medications or have a cardiac pacemaker.

How much will Shockwave therapy cost me?

As with all of our treatments, we aim to keep the costs as affordable as possible. This is why, unlike many other clinics, we include the cost of Shockwave Therapy within our osteopathy appointments. There is no additional charge.

Shockwave therapy works best when sessions are delivered approximately 1 week apart. The effect of the treatment is cumulative, so you will typically need more than one treatment, usually 4 to 8. The nature of your condition and your response to the treatment will play a key role in determining how many treatments will be needed.

We have found that the majority of conditions improve faster with shockwave in conjunction with osteopathic treatment. As we do not ‘block book’ courses of osteopathy appointments, we have come up with a couple of packages to cover any additional Shockwave Therapy treatments you may need.
